West India Madeira Fine Rich Reserve 5 Years Old Madeira Wine
This Madeira wine is produced on Madeira Island, Portugal, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 900 km southwest of Lisbon. The volcanic basalt-based soils and subtropical climate—with mild humidity and temperatures averaging 22°C in summer and 16°C in winter—create ideal growing conditions. Vineyards in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Câmara de Lobos, São Vicente, and Ponta Delgada cultivate the Tinta Negra grape, trained on traditional Latada trellises. The grapes are hand-harvested from late August to mid-October in selective passes. After destemming and crushing, the must ferments with skin maceration in stainless steel tanks for 2–3 days before fermentation is stopped by adding neutral grape spirit (96º) to preserve sweetness. Following traditional vinification, the wine undergoes the Estufagem process—heated at 40–50°C for three months—then is aged in oak casks for at least five years before bottling, resulting in a rich, mature Madeira of depth and balance.
