Quinta Da Alorna

Incorporating centuries of tradition with a commitment to modernity, Quinta da Alorna stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Lopo de Carvalho family. For five generations, they have cultivated this historic estate, blending time-honored winemaking practices with a progressive embrace of qualifications and sustainable environmental initiatives.

As an economic, social, and environmentally sustainable entity, Quinta da Alorna consistently crafts superior-quality products, fostering strong connections with employees, partners, and consumers alike.

Nestled along the serene banks of the Tagus (Tejo) River in the Tejo wine region, this estate not only produces exceptional wines but also boasts diverse agricultural, forested, and natural landscapes, covering a vast expanse of 6400 acres. With 400 acres dedicated to vineyards, 1200 acres for agricultural crops, and an impressive 4700 acres of forest, the estate showcases a harmonious blend of nature's bounty.

Within its agricultural domain, Quinta da Alorna cultivates a variety of crops for the agri-food industry, including corn, potatoes, peanuts, peas, and sweet potatoes. The extensive forested areas house cork oak forests, pine groves, and eucalyptus trees, contributing to sustainable practices and carbon dioxide mitigation. Additionally, the estate proudly hosts six solar power plants, underscoring its commitment to green energy.

The influence of the Tagus (Tejo) River on the region's terroirs is undeniable, creating the ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The proximity of the vineyards to the river imparts a crucial thermal amplitude to the grapes, ensuring the wines exhibit a refreshing profile and exceptional quality.

Quinta da Alorna's terroir encompasses the Charneca and the Campo vineyards, each with its distinct characteristics. Here, grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Fernão Pires, Arinto, and Chardonnay flourish, showcasing the estate's diverse and rich vinicultural heritage.

  • Campo, located on the plains near the river, benefits from periodic flooding, enriching its soils and making it a prime location for white wine production. Precision viticulture is essential here, given the region's natural fertility.

  • Charneca, positioned to the south of Campo along the left bank of the river, features sandy and low-fertility soils, ideally suited for both red and white wine production.

In every glass of Quinta da Alorna wine, you taste the blend of tradition, innovation, and sustainable practices that define this exceptional Portuguese winery.

Quinta da Alorna Reserva Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon

Produced with grapes grown exclusively in Charneca soils*, from vineyards over 35 years old, harvested separately. The maceration was done in cold for 2 days, followed by the alcoholic fermentation with a controlled temperature of 23°C. The varieties were aged separately for 12 months in second-year American and French Oak barrels. The final batch is assembled and filtered before bottling.

*In the south of the Tejo River is the Charneca zone. The Charneca is a dry, flat area marked by poor, sandy soils that force the vines to struggle, and in turn produce more complex fruit. In this zone, higher temperatures compel the grapes to mature faster than in the rest of the Tejo region.

Marquesa de Alorna Grande Reserva Branco

Marquesa de Alorna results from unique weather conditions and the selection of the best grape varieties each year. This 2021 harvest originated from four grape varieties coming from the transitional area between Lezíria and Charneca.

The viticultural year was considered normal and dry. The relatively rainy winter and the precipitation that occurred in the months of April and June allowed water not to be a limiting factor for the normal development of the vine until a fairly advanced stage of the cycle. During the months of July and August, there was no precipitation, and the temperatures recorded were mild, ideal for balanced ripening, with the harvest starting on August 9th.

The grapes, grown using integrated production methods, are manually harvested and separately placed in 18kg boxes. They are destemmed and gently pressed in long and low-pressure cycles during the morning. After the must clarification, fermentation begins in new French oak barrels of 225 and 300 liters, remaining on the fine lees for 10 months with batonnage. The best barrels are selected, and a blend is made with 60% of other grape varieties that age in stainless steel. After bottling, the wine matures in the bottle for a minimum period of one year.

Quinta da Alorna Grande Reserva 1723 Tinto
$0.00

"300 years of history of a property that has never lost its origin, its name, or its identity. The 1723 wine was designed and created exclusively for the celebration of its tricentenary. In a very distinctive interpretation of a unique place, left by those who preceded us, 1723 comes from the Planalto vineyard, where the Tinta Miúda, Castelão, and Alicante Bouschet grape varieties show their essence. The 10-month aging in French oak barrels was the time needed to integrate and envelop the concise fruit that we first extracted during the winemaking process. Sculpted from the vineyard to the bottle to last over time, it follows a fresher line, becoming a very fine blend, with a lightness that transcends and defies the dogmas of oenology.

A limited edition of 712 bottles, once from India to the Tejo and now from Tejo to the world, bearing the origin, the name, the identity, the place - QUINTA DA ALORNA.

In general, the year was dry. In the spring, there was some rainfall at the right time for the plant's development, resulting in a generous production of very healthy grapes. The months leading up to the start of the harvest saw mild daytime temperatures of no more than 30-35ºC and cold nights, resulting in slow, balanced ripening and, in turn, wines with a perfect balance between the natural acidity and sugar content in the must.

Manual harvesting 18 kg boxes. Selection on a direct sorting table into open horizontal 500 kg tanks simulating “lagares” (space where the grapes are crushed). Fermentation begins with the whole bunch as if it were a carbonic maceration, thus starting an intracellular fermentation to promote the fruit. The grapes are destemmed 2/3 of the way through fermentation, the density rises again, and foot treading begins until the end of fermentation, followed by a vertical press. Each variety is aged individually in French oak barrels with 14 months of previous use for 10 months. Naturally stabilized.
